Actor Chris Evans is very familiar with superhero and comic book movies, as he played Steve Rogers/Captain America in numerous Marvel movies over the years. At Emerald City Con 2024, Evans said comic book movies deserve more credit, and he also revealed his own personal favorite Marvel movie that he got to make in his career.
As reported by Variety, Evans said that “for whatever reason,” comic book films “don’t always get the credit I think they deserve.”
“They are these big, giant movies. There’s a lot of cooks in the kitchen. But the empirical evidence is in: They are not easy to make. If it was easier, there would be a lot more good ones,” he said. “I’m not throwing shade! I’ve been a part of a few that missed. It happens. Making a movie is tough. More cooks in the kitchen doesn’t make it easier. I don’t want to highlight specific films in the Marvel catalogue but some of them are phenomenal. Like independently, objectively great movies and I think they deserve a little more credit.”
Regarding his comments about having “more cooks in the kitchen,” this could be a reference to the many stakeholders involved in making gigantic superhero and comic book films. Actor Ray Winstone, who appeared in Black Widow, said making that movie felt “soul-destroying” and he considered quitting after producers came in to change things up in re-shoots.
Going back to Evans, he also said during the event that 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Solider was his favorite Marvel movie to make. Evans said he was “so nervous” on the first Captain America, and remarked that he was “playing not to lose” with the first movie. But with The Winter Soldier, Evans gained confidence and said, “We were playing to win.”
“And it’s the first movie with the Russo Brothers. We were taking more risks and the character felt more fleshed out. It was one of the more satisfying experiences I’ve had in my Marvel run,” he said.
2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, meanwhile, was directed by Joe Johnston.
Evans is apparently finished playing Captain America after Avengers: Endgame. But he’s not ruling out a return to the MCU completely. “I would never say never, but I am very protective. It’s a very precious role to me, so it would have to be just right,” he said in 2023.
